TOGETHER WE STAND: Robert Vargas

ABOUT

This project was created for a unit at the University of the Arts London. We were tasked with critically engaging with a piece of work that has inspired how we think about visual communication. I chose to focus on Los Angeles-based muralist Robert Vargas, this piece examines how his large-scale murals function as graphic design as it communicates cultural identity, community narratives, and visual messages directly into the walls of a city. This challenges the traditional graphic design canon by repositioning the mural as a legitimate and powerful form of visual communication.

I used projection mapping to animate Vargas's murals alongside sourced footage of LA, bring a piece of Los Angeles to London. This installation focused on the idea that a person's understanding of what graphic design is is shaped entirely by what they have access to. By expanding the canon to include Vargas's work, the project advocates for a more inclusive and culturally honest definition of graphic design.
