FRANKENSTEIN


ABOUTThis is a book cover for the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley made for a typography course, with the constraint of using only type and type treatment: no imagery or characters. Drawn to the project as an opportunity to work in mixed media, the design uses textile techniques to build texture and reference the novel's themes directly. The layout was composed in InDesign, printed, and then physically cut in half before being hand-sewn back together, a nod to Frankenstein's creature itself, assembled from mismatched parts. The seams and thread running through the type creates an unsettling sense that the two halves don't quite belong together, mirroring the unnatural, cobbled-together nature of the story. This uses type as both the visual and the concept.
